Tap Attack is visiting Portsmouth : Tap Dance in Portsmouth

Local tap dancers are in for a real treat this October with four of the UK’s hottest tap dancers coming to Portsmouth.

Tap Attack, which is an amalgam of the UK’s hottest tap dancers and choreographers, is kicking of their autumn 2008 events at the Priory Community Sports Centre, on Sunday October 26.

Formed in 2006 by Jo Scanlan and Dean Magri with a vision of providing tap dancers opportunities to experience different styles and have exposure to current trends. Travelling to different towns and cities so far to date Tap Attack have taught classes too more than 450 people. Tap Attack workshops are inclusive to all ages although guidelines are set for 10 years and over. On the day dancers are able to participate in up to 4 workshops (1 with each teacher), a unique way to gain experience in different styles.

Amongst the teachers in Portsmouth is local dancer Tarik Winston. Originally from New York and now residing in Portsmouth, Tarik has danced on Broadway from a very early age. He has appeared in shows "Black & Blue", "Porgy & Bess", "Steel City" and choreographed and appeared in the international hit show "Riverdance".

Tappers will get the opportunity to take a master class with Tarik, and all three of the other teachers, including stars from Dean Perry’s hit westend shows, "Tap Dogs" and "Hot Shoe Shuffle" Nick Yeoman and Ian Waller.

Tap Attack is the brain child of tap choreographer Jo Scanlan, who has been teaching at the major vocational college around the UK for the past 7 years, having trained in America with tap dancing legends including Henry Le Tang, Bunny Briggs, Heather Cornell and the Manhattan Tap Company.

The day is designed for all tap dancers over the age of 10; they are then split into different groups. "All abilities are covered from the advanced beginner to the most advanced dancer. This is the chance for everyone to tap the day away regardless of age or standard and to share a love of tap," said Jo.
